The two camps were in a cycle lane behind Little Anglesey Road, Gosport, and behind Gosport Leisure Centre, on the A32.

Overnight on Saturday they both moved to Alver Valley, a country park in Lee-on-the-Solent.

Councillor Mark Hook, the leader of Gosport Borough Council, said the travellers broke through a bolted gate, which meant police had the power to issue an immediate removal notice, known as a Section 61 notice.

Cllr Hook said: ‘We asked the inspector to issue the notice but they would not – even though property had been damaged and they clearly had the power to do so. I am disgusted.’

The News tried several times to contact Hampshire Constabulary for a response.
