Hampshire County Council reaffirms call on other local authorities to avoid '˜Solent cabinet' plan

A COUNCIL has reaffirmed its message to other local authorities to not sign up to join a new cabinet for the Solent area.

Councillors on Hampshire County Council are set to debate a report on Thursday from the local authority’s cabinet in which it sets out to other local authorities not to join the proposed Solent Combined Authority (SCA) unless all of the county’s councils can join.

The SCA is a proposed ‘Solent cabinet’ from Portsmouth, Southampton and Isle of Wight’s council to devolve extra powers from government.

The county council are against the plans for the SCA as it will be only open to south Hampshire authorities if it is established with the local authority calling for it to be open to councils from all across Hampshire.

In the report, it reads: ‘The County Council strongly opposes Hampshire district councils joining the SCA unless all such councils are admitted.’

It will be debated at a full council meeting on Thursday.
