NEW Conservative MP Alan Mak has tried to play down expectations – insisting he has twice as much hair but only half the brains of his predecessor.

Mr Mak replaced David Willetts as the Tory representative for Havant after last month’s general election.

I want to manage the House’s expectations for the future - because although I have twice as much hair as David I must confess I only have half his brains.

Mr Willetts stepped down after 20 years as Havant MP.

In his maiden speech Mr Mak made reference to Mr Willetts’ nickname of ‘Two Brains.’

He said: ‘As many MPs will know, David was affectionately nicknamed Two Brains.

‘I want to manage the House’s expectations for the future – because although I have twice as much hair as David I must confess I only have half his brains.

‘But I do hope to make up for it with my passion for Havant.’

Mr Mak also praised Mr Willetts as a ‘practical and innovative thinker’ adding many of his ideas became government policy.

He said: ‘David understood that a strong economy is the driver of social mobility and building a country where everyone has the chance to succeed, no matter their starting point in life, will be the focus of my work in this House.’
