Hayling councillor says island is being '˜picked on' by local authority

Clare Satchwell spoke out as more than 1,000 people signed a petition against plans that could see the household waste and recycling centre closed.

She says it’s the latest in a line of decisions that affect Hayling, including the ferry closing and a new 30mph speed limit being introduced.

Cllr Satchwell, who represents Hayling East, said: ‘I think the council is targeting Hayling and enough is enough now.

‘It withdrew the subsidy for the ferry, it imposed the 30mph limit.

‘It seems like it is aiming savings at Hayling and it feels disproportionate. There’s genuine outrage from residents.

‘There’s new houses being built and we only have one road going on and off.

‘How many more road journeys will this cause?

‘What will be the impact on traffic?’

A public consultation is being held about the recycling centre.

Critics fear its closure will lead to an increase in fly-tipping on the island as people will not be prepared to drive to the nearest centre in Havant.

Cllr Satchwell said as many people as possible needed to comment on the consultation.

She said the impact of closing the tip could be disastrous.

‘I think there will be a lot more fly-tipping,’ she said.

‘We have got quite a lot of rural areas where it’s relatively easy to fly-tip.

‘I think people will start burning rubbish again.’
