HMS Sultan in Gosport recently had a special reception where 46 recipients were presented with donations from funds raised at events, by Captain Peter Towell, the Commanding Officer of the base.

Captain Towell said: 'It is with great pleasure that we welcome so many of our local and Service charities in to HMS Sultan today for our Charity Chest presentation.'

The big sum of money was distributed between various charities, groups and schools in and around Portsmouth, as well as nation wide service charities such as the Royal Navy and Royal Marine charities.

One of the beneficiaries was Rowner Infant School, which received £1,000.

Headteacher Debora Redpath said: '˜We're going to use the donation for a children's garden and to build a Remembrance area within there as part of 100th anniversary in November.

'˜About a third of our children are from service families so the Remembrance element is really important for those that are still serving and for those that have served in the past.

'It's nice to be recognised as we're a small infant school and often they get overlooked in favour of bigger secondary schools.'

The £30,000 was raised during HMS Sultan's weekend Summer Show back in June.
