Housing boom sees highest number of homes built in Portsmouth since 2009

A HOUSING boom in Portsmouth has seen the biggest swell of new homes created in the city in five years.

Figures from Portsmouth City Council’s city development annual monitoring report for 2014/15 show that 419 homes were completed during the period covered, more than any year since 2009/10.

The news has been welcomed by the city council, which said it showed Portsmouth’s economy was on the up.

Councillor Luke Stubbs, the authority’s cabinet member for planning, regeneration and economic development, said: ‘Housing construction is a key indicator of how an area’s economy is performing and so it is a positive sign that our figures are on the up.

‘This report shows the most completed housing construction projects the city has had since the global recession hit.

‘It is good news for both residents and businesses in the city and bodes well for our future plans such as the regeneration of Tipner and Horsea Island through the City Deal project.’
