A TOUGH but exhilarating year – those were the words of a council leader in summing up 2012.

Ken Moon, leader of East Hampshire District Council and also a councillor for Clanfield, said: ‘The country’s financial situation remains difficult and budgets remain tight, but in spite of this we have enjoyed one of the most exciting years in living memory.

‘The financial picture has made for gloomy viewing for everyone, with businesses and households all tightening their belts this year.

‘And the public sector, too, continues to take its full share of the economic burden as the government attempts to bridge the deficit. However, 2012 has also been a year of celebration and success.

‘In June the nation came together as one community to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

‘The Olympics and Paralympics showed the world that Britain can shrug off the recession to achieve great things.

‘If we can approach the next 12 months with the same zeal and determination as we saw in the last then I am sure 2013 will be just as successful.’
