OPPOSITION councillors will lead a committee looking at the work of Gosport council.

Labour councillor June Cully, member for Town ward at the borough council, will chair the overview and scrutiny committee.

Her party colleague councillor Keith Farr, member for Forton ward, will serve as vice-chairman.

Conservative cllr Bob Forder, formerly independent, had been chair and Conservative cllr Tony Jessop served as vice-chairman.

Cllr Farr said he is pleased to take up the position at the council.

He said: ‘I’m sure there’s many things to go through Gosport that we need to put through this committee as they come up.

‘We will look at it and scrutinise it and make sure it is done properly.

‘It is very, very important now that we scrutinise as much as we can.’

The Labour group asked to lead the committee at full council on Thursday.

Leader of the council, cllr Mark Hook, said it is important to have opposition councillors in the role.

He said: ‘It was fully supported by the Conservative group.

‘Bob Forder has done an excellent job over the last four or five years.’
