EAST Hampshire’s leader has paid tribute to a long-serving councillor, describing him as a ‘true gentleman’.

Councillor Ferris Cowper was speaking after the death of Petersfield stalwart John West, who died after a long illness on New Year’s Day, aged 73.

He said: ‘John was a fine councillor and served the people of East Hampshire with commitment and dedication.

‘He was a true gentleman and charmed everyone who came into contact with him. East Hampshire is a poorer place without his wisdom, insight and his ready smile.’
