THE Lib Dems have come under fire after a party member was quoted as saying that joining the Tories was the same as becoming a terrorist.
Former Portsmouth Lib Dem Nassar Kessell posted a status on his Facebook profile quoting Eastleigh Lib Dem youth candidate Hannah Ashworth as saying ‘joining the Tories is like joining IS.’
Conservative Portsmouth members have attacked the comment and say it’s insulting given the work being carried out to eradicate extremism.
Neither Mr Kessell or Miss Ashworth would make a comment to The News, but a Lib Dem party spokesman said on their behalf: ‘The Lib Dems have been made aware of the post.
‘Mr Kessell has removed the post and apologised for any offence caused.’
Tory environment and community safety boss Rob New said: ‘Perhaps Hannah Ashworth should choose her words more carefully. This is deeply offensive and hurtful.’

Tory councillor Simon Bosher said: ‘There are a lot of people out there who have been victims of terrorism. It’s extremely offensive two Lib Dems think that comparing Tories to members of IS is a bit of a joke.’
Tory councillor Scott Harris added: ‘It’s a bizarre comment.’
Nassar Kessell, south central director for Liberal Youth and standing for election in Aldershot, has since called Cllr New ‘very, very childish’ on Twitter for being offended by his post.
