Local MP elected to promote apprenticeships in Westminster

AN MP has been elected as the co-chairman of a parliamentary group which will lobby and promote apprenticeships in Westminster.

Havant MP Alan Mak will work with the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Apprenticeships, comprised of MPs and Lords.

The group communicates with business leaders and meets to discuss ways to bolster apprenticeships.

Mr Mak was elected by his fellow MPs as the co-chairman alongside Labour’s Catherine McKinnell. The pair will work to ensure apprenticeships are seen by government as a pathway to a career.

Mr Mak said: ‘I am a firm believer that apprenticeships help employers and employees, giving young people the skills they need to succeed.

‘Almost three million apprenticeships have been created since May 2010. This year alone 905,000 people are in an apprenticeship.

‘I am proud the government is committed to delivering three million more apprenticeships by 2020.’
