PLANS for 2,550 homes on fields near Waterlooville have finally been given the go-ahead.

Developers will have to pay out more than £20m towards extra facilities, including two new primary schools, sports pitches, a new pub, a new leisure centre, community centre and road improvements.

The development has been in the offing for the last 15 years, but councillors yesterday gave the final go-ahead that will transform the 520 acres of fields between Waterlooville and Denmead.

Developer Grainger has also been given approval to start building the first phase of the development later this year.

This will be 194 homes on land opposite the Asda supermarket in Waterlooville.

The style of the houses – 40 per cent of which will be affordable – will be the architecture of Hampshire villages such as Hambledon.

The homes are part of the Waterlooville Major Development Area, with 450 homes already being built by developer Taylor Wimpey.

Councillors of both Winchester City Council and Havant Borough Council met at Springwood Community Centre, Stakes, to vote on the plans.

Both authorities had to decide as the land lies on the border.

Havant councillors voted unanimously to support the plans, while eight Winchester councillors voted in favour, with one against.

Waterlooville councillor Paul Buckley said most residents accepted new homes were needed.

He said ‘The residents of Waterlooville have been debating this for 15 years.

‘Mr Prescott was talking about 9,000 homes on the site. We have got it down to 3,000 now.’

Winchester councillor Ian Tait said: ‘We are being presented with an exceptionally high-quality scheme.

‘Housing is not a bad thing. The number of houses we delivered last year was inadequate for this country. They will be investing a significant amount of money into the local community.’

The new homes and facilities will be built in 13 phases over the next 12 to 16 years.

New allotments and a cemetery will be included, as well as a town park, open space, woodland and ponds.

John Beresford, director of development at Grainger, said: ‘We are very much looking forward to seeing the community come to life.’
