FAMILIES on benefits and foster carers in Portsmouth are being offered big discounts on bikes this Christmas.
Portsmouth City Council has launched its family bike offer for residents, which could see the council forking out 80 per cent towards the cost of a children’s bike and £100 towards a selected adult bike from designated cycle shops in the city.
The scheme is open for those holding a valid Portsmouth Leisure Card, which are available for free for people receiving ‘means-tested benefits’and for foster carers.
As part of the drive, families will attend a free, two-hour family cycle training session, which teaches basic skills. Successful applicants will also receive front and rear lights, a hi-vis jacket and a helmet.
Councillor Jim Fleming, cabinet member for traffic and transportation, hoped the move would help needy families, adding: ‘We want to encourage more people to cycle in the city but we know cost can be a real barrier.’
