COUNCILLOR Dickson’s first duty as mayor was to hand out awards to two of Gosport’s best citizens.
Maureen Swire and Sophie Merrick were nominated by the public to receive awards yesterday in recognition of their hard work in the town.
Maureen, 73, has been the conductor of the St Vincent Singers since 1976 and was named citizen of the year for her work.
Sophie, 16, is a member of the Gosport Youth Council.
She was given the Gosport Youth Award for improving Lee-on-the-Solent’s skate park and boosting relationships within the community. She also raised £1,000 for Help For Heroes at a charity dinner.
