PENNY Mordaunt is calling for young men to sign up to the Anthony Nolan stem cell register.

The Portsmouth North Tory MP, pictured right, has pledged to help the charity recruit at least 10 men in her constituency to help the charity save the lives of people with blood cancer.

Its register, which contains the names and details of potential blood stem cell donors, matches volunteers to people who need lifesaving transplants.

Men aged 18-30 make up 80 per cent of the volunteers whose donations are needed, but they make up just 19 per cent of the register.

The charity needs a further 10,000 more young men on the register.

Ms Mordaunt plans to write to youth groups, colleges and other community groups, and raise the issue with young people she meets around the constituency this summer.

She said: ‘There are 1,600 people in the UK in need of a potentially lifesaving stem cell transplant. By joining the Anthony Nolan Register, these young men will be offering patients the chance of life and a new hope to their families.

‘I know many young people in Portsmouth will relish the chance to step forward and join the Anthony Nolan register.’
