MPs from region have their say as move to back tougher tier system to restrict spread of coronavirus is passed as lockdown ends

A NEW tougher tier system of coronavirus restrictions for England was approved by MPs this evening and will now come into force tomorrow when lockdown ends.

The measures were supported by 291 votes to 78 meaning it was carried by a majority of 213.

The new system will see over 55 million people in the country placed into the top two strictest tiers.

But 55 Tory MPs voted against the move – the largest rebellion of Boris Johnson's term as prime minister – while 16 abstained.

Conservative MPs from the region, including Penny Mordaunt, Caroline Dinenage, Suella Braverman and Alan Mak all backed the move. Labour MP Stephen Morgan is thought to have abstained.

A government spokesman said they welcomed the result of the vote, which will ‘help to safeguard the gains made during the past month and keep the virus under control’ but would ‘continue to work with MPs who have expressed concerns in recent days’.
