A part three and part four-storey building will be constructed in place of the former Addenbrooke House care home in Willis Road, Gosport.

Councillors at the borough council's regulatory board were told all the units would be affordable housing.

Occupants would be nominated to the landowner, Hampshire County Council, by the borough council.

They would be extra care units.

It comes as the county council estimates it needs 276 units in Gosport by 2035 - there are currently just 50 at Juniper Court.

In a deputation, the applicant Places for People Living+, said: ‘Whilst the scheme will be open to over 55s, the over-75 population is a good indication of overall levels of need given that the average age of occupants of such facilities is over 75.

‘The over-75 population across Gosport borough was 7,500 in 2015, and this is due to increase by 86 per cent by 2035.’

It added the homes would ‘provide much needed, modern extra care accommodation to help address this under supply’.

The development will comprise of one and two-bed flats.

Natural England did not object to the scheme, which was approved in July.

Morgan Ashley Care Developments will build the site, and it will be run by Places for People Living+. Both firms won the contracts in a procurement process run by the county council.
