MORE than 100 new homes were approved as a new community continues to grow.

The joint planning committee of Winchester and Havant councils approved 104 homes for land off Hambledon Road, Waterlooville.

The development, on a grassy area close to Brambles Farm Industrial Estate, will comprise another section of Berewood, which will have more than 2,500 homes when completed.

The proposals were initially set to be refused because there was no affordable housing.

But councillors at the meeting agreed that because the development was all private rented accommodation – and not house sales – it was appropriate.

Stakes Cllr Cyril Hilton, who sits on the committee, said the Berewood development was taking shape.

‘It’s going well,’ he said.

‘I live across the road from it and everything is looking fine.

‘Lots of people were sceptics in the beginning but developer Grainger is doing a really good job.’
