Jonathan Glen is Hampshire County Council’s new chairman, taking over the chain of office from Colin Davidovitz.
As the civic and ceremonial head, the chairman presides over council meetings with the job of ensuring they are conducted in line with standing orders and that they remain a forum for debating issues.
The chairman also represents the council on royal visits and ceremonial occasions in Hampshire as well as other civic activities and duties.
Cllr Glen was elected chairman by fellow councillors at the annual meeting.
His chosen theme for this year is freedom and democracy.
He said: ‘I’d like to thank all the councillors for their support and faith in me, which is not taken for granted.
‘It is a great honour and I will carry out this duty in a manner that is fair to all.’
Cllr Glen has lived in Hampshire for 33 years, and brings nearly three decades of local government experience.
