NEW designs for the Spinnaker Tower are set to be unveiled by the end of this week.

Despite a media report today suggesting the tower will remain predominantly white, The News understands the Spinnaker will still be painted a different colour as part of resubmitted plans.

The new look follows a £3.5m naming rights deal with airline giant Emirates earlier this month.

The soon-to-be-called Emirates Spinnaker Tower was approved by Portsmouth City Council to raise revenue.

But initial designs proposing to turn a large part of the tower red and white – the colours of Southampton FC – drew fierce criticism, with more than 10,000 people signing a petition opposing the decision.

That led to the council and Emirates going back to the drawing board over an alternative design.

A new proposal has now been submitted, which will feature a different colour instead of red, and Emirates logos at the base of the tower.

It is hoped the redesign will be revealed in the next few days, with the new-look Spinnaker needing to be completed by mid-July ahead of the America’s Cup World Series in the city.
