NEW ticket systems are set to be introduced for trains.

The government is investing £3.25m in modernising ‘touch in - touch out’ ticketing technology for rail passengers.

The funding will allow South West Trains to upgrade the ticketing system of its stations outside London.

Tim Shoveller, managing director for South West Trains - Network Rail Alliance, said: ‘This is great news for our customers and we are pleased to be working with the Department of Transport to expand our existing commitment to smart ticketing.’

The project is part of a £45m south-east flexible ticketing project by the Department of Transport.
