A PERCEIVED front-runner in the battle to lead Hampshire County Council has said he will not stand.

The council’s leader for environment, Councillor Mel Kendal, was expected to challenge Cllr Ken Thornber as leader of the authority’s ruling Tory group, at the party’s general meeting on May 10.

But he has confirmed he won’t stage a challenge, leaving only Cllr Thornber’s deputy, Cllr Roy Perry, confirmed as running against him.

Other challengers can come forward before May 10.
