Police called about Vote Leave teller in Portsmouth

Reports on Facebook had suggested the teller was asked to leave the polling station at St Jude’s Church in Kent Road, Southsea.

But a Portsmouth City Council spokeswoman said this was not the case.

She said: ‘He was not asked to leave at all.

‘A member of the public had contacted the police but he packed up on his own.

‘At no point was he asked to leave.

‘No-one has been removed or asked to leave.’

There is no suggestion from the council the teller had done anything wrong.

The Facebook page called ‘Portsmouth – Vote Leave’ posted saying police had attended.

Those behind the page, which has 1,038 people on it, have been contacted by The News.

Voters are going to the polls today to vote to either Remain or Leave the European Union.

Earlier today, Gosport man Kieran Gell was told at a polling station that he was not allowed to use a pen to vote in the ballot.

He was told that using the pen would make his vote void, despite the Electoral Commission saying that voters are welcome to use pens.
