CANVASS forms must be filled out by anyone who wants to vote, Portsmouth City Council has warned.

The council has sent forms to every home in the city, in order to register every voter within the council’s boundaries, and ensure they are able to vote in local and national elections.

And its representatives have reminded Portsmouth residents of other benefits of returning the forms.

Louise Wilders, the council’s head of customer, community and democratic services, said: ‘Completing the form has never been easier. You can text us, fill details out online, call us or send back your form by freepost.

‘Having correct details not only means you’re registered to vote, but it can also affect your credit rating as companies use the electoral register to check information. It’s important to remember you are not automatically entitled to vote just because you pay council tax or have voted before.’

For more information, call the council’s election services office on (023) 9283 4074.
