Portsmouth City Council commits to apprentices

A COUNCIL has committed to recruiting more apprenticeships hoping to have more than 100 by 2019.

Portsmouth City Council has endorsed plans by its employment committee to recruit more.

They already have 75 apprentices throughout the organisation in areas ranging from finance to social care. It will be looking to build on this once the national apprenticeship levy is introduced with up to 140 apprentices set to be employed by 2019.

Councillor Donna Jones, leader of the council and chairman of the employment committee, said: ‘It is fantastic the number of apprentices employed by the council has risen sharply in recent years but we still have potential to expand this and recruit more.

‘The national apprenticeship levy gives us a great opportunity to help even more young people put the foundations in place for a successful career.’
