Portsmouth Conservative councillor goes independent in latest resignation

A former Conservative cabinet member has quit the party's group at Portsmouth City Council.

Councillor Jennie Brent is now listed as a non-aligned independent.

She was housing cabinet member when the Tories ran the council before ithe authority was taken over by the Liberal Democrats in May.

Cllr Brent's resignation is the latest to hit the party, with Cllr Jim Fleming having resigned his party membership.

The News has attempted to contact Cllr Brent, who represents Eastney and Craneswater ward alongside Tory deputy group leader Luke Stubbs and Lib Dem Matthew Winnington.

The Lib Dems' minority administration runs the council with 16 councillors. The Tories now have 17 councillors, with four independents and five Labour members.
