BOUNDARY Commission plans for Portsmouth would see the city split east and west, with two new additions to the constituencies.
The city, which currently returns MPs for its north and south regions, would in 2015 be asked to vote for representatives for Portsmouth West and Portsmouth East.
Purbrook, currently in the Havant constituency, would become part of Portsmouth East, while Portchester East, now in Fareham, would be included in Portsmouth West.
Portsmouth South Lib Dem MP Mike Hancock said: ‘This hasn’t been agreed yet, as there’s a long process to go through. Personally, I think it’s unnecessary to change Portsmouth in this way, as the new wards will have their smaller services provided by Havant Borough and Fareham Borough Councils respectively, and their major services by Hampshire County Council. I think both seats would be winnable for the Lib Dems. I would expect us to win Portsmouth West and I think we could make a good fight for Portsmouth East.’
Portsmouth North MP Penny Mordaunt said: ‘We’re still a long way off and a lot may change. I feel sorry for residents who may feel they’re just being moved about. But I would definitely stand, so the people can decide if they want me in Portsmouth East or West.’
