The Portsmouth South MP explained the work at the station over the next three years will increase capacity by 30 per cent and improve over half a million daily journeys to and from London.

‘This announcement paves the way for improvements to longer distance routes into Waterloo, putting Portsmouth firmly in the frame for future investment to improve train services from our city to the capital,’ said Mrs Drummond, who is the lead Hampshire MP on rail infrastructure.

She said the news helped to strengthen Portsmouth’s long-term hopes of improved lines across the county and to London and added she was determined to pressure the government to achieve this.
