THE leader of Portsmouth’s Labour group says he does not agree with MPs for his party nationally that £7.5m of government money shouldn’t have gone towards Sir Ben Ainslie’s bid to build a race base in Portsmouth.

Cllr John Ferrett said he backs the project at the Camber so long as it creates jobs for local people and the money is not used to improve the lives of millionaires. It comes after Labour MPs blasted the move and said it would have been better to spend money on sports open to everybody, rather than on an ‘elite’ one. Cllr Donna Jones, council leader, said: ‘This is the start of an exciting chapter in Portsmouth’s history.’
