Portsmouth MP '˜focused' on Cameron's EU renegotiation efforts despite '˜Brexit' rumours

Rumours have surfaced that the so-called ‘Brexit’ campaign has won the support of the Portsmouth North MP.

A report in The Sun yesterday said Ms Mordaunt is set to become one of the faces of the nationwide ‘out’ campaign ahead of the referendum, expected on June 23.

But speaking to The News, Ms Mordaunt says she’s solely focused on supporting David Cameron in his attempts to renegotiate the UK’s membership.

She said: ‘Everyone is supporting the prime minister to get the best possible deal he can for the “in” option.

‘What we want for the referendum is the best “in” option he can possibly negotiate.

‘What we should be saying are things like that. I’m absolutely supporting the prime minister as he tries to get agreement on these issues.

‘That’s what we are focused on at the moment.’

The government’s Tory cabinet is expected to meet today to discuss the deal Mr Cameron has reached.

Ministers would then be able to break ranks and say where they stand.

It’s also been reported that there are already five confirmed ‘outers’ in the Cabinet — Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith, Commons Leader Chris Grayling, Culture Secretary John Whittingdale, Northern Ireland Secretary Theresa Villiers and Employment’s Priti Patel.

Mr Cameron has said he wants the UK and other EU parliaments to give Brussels the ‘red card’ should it try to roll out new legislation they’re not happy with – and he is not interested in being part of an ‘EU super state’.
