Portsmouth MP says Britain can 'focus on the future' as Brexit deal passes

MP Penny Mordaunt has said Britain can now ‘focus on the future’ after the deal passed.

Ms Mordaunt, who is on the bill team along with Michael Gove and prime minister Boris Johnson, said the passing of the deal was the end of ‘a long four years.

She was due to be at the despatch box when Royal Assent was given.

The MP said: ‘It has been a long four years, especially that last one.

‘At last we’ve done what many said was impossible.

‘An unprecedented deal has now been ratified by Parliament and the EU Bill received Royal Assent.

‘My feelings are overwhelmingly of huge pride in our country, it’s citizens and our city in sticking with what we thought was the right course.

‘Now we can focus on the future, our recovery, growing the economy and reaching our full potential. In this next chapter I’ve no doubt we will flourish.’

Yesterday when sharing a photo of himself signing the Brexit deal, Boris Johnson tweeted: ‘By signing this deal, we fulfill the sovereign wish of the British people to live under their own laws, made by their own elected Parliament.’

Labour opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer saw more than 30 of his MPs rebel against orders to back the deal.

Former Labour leader and now independent, Jeremy Corbyn, refused to back the deal yesterday.
