Fareham MP Suella Braverman joined Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab MP and Works and Pensions secretary Esther McVey in quitting cabinet.

However after being locked in talks with the PM last night at 10 Downing Street, Ms Mordaunt appears to be set to remain in Mrs May's cabinet.

Journalist Tim Shipman tweeted: '˜Gove, Fox, Grayling, Mordaunt and Leadsom have agreed collectively to stay and will work together 'to get this in a better place" says a vg source.

'˜Resigning and joining a rebellion is not going to help anything.'

Yesterday Tory backbencher Jacob Rees-Mogg MP backed Ms Mordaunt as a candidate to replace Mrs May.

Alongside Boris Johnson, David Davis and Dominic Raab.

Ms Mordaunt was reported to have asked Mrs May last night to give cabinet and Tory MPs a free vote on her Brexit withdrawal deal when it is brought before parliament.

Sky News have reported that according to a source a no confidence vote in Mrs May is now '˜likely' with all government whips being told to cancel any engagements today and return to London.Â
