PORTSMOUTH North MP Penny Mordaunt says the base is vital for the entire country.

‘We cannot afford the future surface fleet unless we continue to build warships and export as well,’ she said.

‘Portsmouth is the best shop window you could possibly have for selling those kinds of ships. It is the home of the Royal Navy and anyone that has been to one of the recent [ship] launches will know it is isn’t just about the steel that’s cut there, it’s about the relationship between our navy and the foreign navies. I think we need to be more aggressive in our exports and ensure anyone who has an input on this decision is in no doubt of the strategic importance to the future of our defence that Portsmouth and the operation we have here brings.’
