Portsmouth residents to have their say on council tax support scheme

RESIDENTS can give their views on the future of council tax discounts for low-income households in a consultation.

The consultation in Portsmouth, which was launched yesterday, follows a recent budget survey that found more than 77 per cent of residents would support reductions in the amount of council tax support being offered.

The city authority’s council tax support scheme costs more than £12m a year.

Councillor Luke Stubbs, the council’s deputy leader, said: ‘We are reviewing the level of council tax support we provide and want people’s opinions on the options being considered.

‘If we don’t change the scheme we will either have to make bigger savings to other services or bring in a considerable council tax increase.’

The consultation at portsmouth.gov.uk runs until September 29.
