A consultation on the facilities yielded 1,800 responses with 63 per cent in favour of the new site, and 22 per cent against.

Speaking at a recent culture and leisure meeting, Councillor Claire Udy, said: ‘It was good to see a good number of residents coming back from the consultation.

'I am looking forward to what comes of this.'

Culture and leisure boss, Cllr Steve Pitt, explained that the details of the scheme have yet to be decided. He added: 'I know a lot of people were contacting planning saying “can we see the plans for the centre?”

‘There are no plans currently for the centre. We didn’t want a done deal. We want to make sure the look and the feel and the provision of the centre is what people want.’
