It comes after incumbent Michael Lane was deselected in June last year. His former deputy, Flick Drummond, was chosen by the Hampshire party to be the candidate in this year's race.

But in December Mrs Drummond was elected as as MP in the Meon Valley in the general election, leaving the crime commissioner ticket vacant.

Cllr Jones told the News: ‘Having been a magistrate in the city for the last 15 years, I’m thrilled to have been selected as the Conservative candidate for police and crime commissioner for Hampshire and the IOW.

‘This is a huge role, with many competing demands.

‘If elected in May my priorities will be to reduce crime, making Hampshire & the IOW one of the safest places to live in the country, whilst restoring the public’s confidence policing.

People don’t just want to see crime coming down, they want to feel it reducing too. I will make this a priority.

‘Our police work hard and they deserve a commissioner who will work hard too. Less crime, safer streets & justice for victims, that’s what I’ll be delivering.’

Today party members chose Cllr Jones, who stood for election to be Portsmouth South MP in the general election, to stand in the county-wide poll in May. She previously vied to win her party's selection in 2012.

Sources said former Southampton City Council leader Jeremy Moulton was a close second in the selection process.

During the parliamentary election Cllr Jones said there would be a ‘200 more operational police officers in Portsmouth' over the next five years.
