NEW powers for communities will be showcased at an event hosted by Stamshaw and Tipner Neighbourhood Forum tomorrow night.

Portsmouth North MP Penny Mordaunt will showcase the new powers being handed over to plan, build, take over services and challenge councils about what they are doing.

The event at Stamshaw and Tipner Community Centre, which runs between 6pm and 8pm, is open to community groups, forums and residents’ associations across the city.

The purpose of the summit is to inform people what they can do, what legal weight it has and what the benefits are.

Ms Mordaunt said: ‘We have such a strong community in our city and I want to give them the knowledge and tools to make where we live even more amazing.

‘Whether it is the proposed development at Milton on the St James’ site or too many care homes being built on the Havant Road in Drayton and Farlington, we have not had enough thought into what development will enhance an area.

‘I think that neighbourhood plans can be really effective at steering development to that which benefits and adds to the community, not causes problems for it.

‘In addition to planning powers communities will be able to challenge the council on other areas – parking policy being a key one.’
