REVEALED: The best ways to keep warm this winter

ADVICE has been given to Portsmouth residents about the best way to keep warm this winter.

The council says wrapping up and keeping out the cold can help prevent colds, flu or more serious health conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and depression.

The chances of these problems are higher in certain groups of people, such as those aged 65 or over, those on low income who can’t afford heating, people who have a long-term health condition such as diabetes, asthma or heart disease or those who are disabled.

Residents are advised to:

n Heat your home to at least 18C (65F) if you can, especially if you have reduced mobility, are 65 or over, or have a health condition such as heart or lung disease.

n It’s a good idea to keep your bedroom at this temperature all night if you can.

n During the day, you may prefer your living room to be slightly warmer.

n Close curtains and shut doors to keep heat in the rooms you use most.

n Keep your bedroom window closed on a winter’s night as breathing in cold air can increase the risk of chest infections.

n Use a hot water bottle or electric blanket (but not both at the same time) to keep warm while you’re in bed.

n Ensure you get your electric blanket checked every three years.

n Make sure that you have hot meals and drinks regularly throughout the day and keep active in the home if you can.

If possible, try not to sit
still for more than an hour or so.
