REVEALED: List of Portsmouth schools set to benefit from modernisation programme

The Tory-run council last month agreed to stash away £1m to modernise schools in need of repair and a fresh look.

Now those who will benefit have been named in a report set to go before education bosses – but schools will be asked to cough up an extra £215,500 to ensure the full programme goes ahead.

Wimborne Junior is set to get the biggest slice of the fund through the replacement of its roof at a cost of £190,000.

Next is Redwood Park Academy, which gets £170,000 to improve its hot and cold water supply.

Electrics will be upgraded at Northern Parade Schools, worth £160,000, and Springfield gets £132,000 to stop the spread of legionella bacteria.

Portsdown Primary School, Stamshaw Infant School, Langstone Junior School and Mayfield School will also get a cash boost.

Councillor Donna Jones, city council boss, said: ‘For the third consecutive year, Portsmouth City Council is making education its number one priority. This year, we are spending more than £1m on improving school buildings, and maintaining them to ensure the children of Portsmouth have the best possible education.’

A separate £4.47m has also been set aside as part of the council’s capital budget – money used for big projects – so secondary schools can be expanded in the years ahead to ensure there are enough spaces for students after 2020. Some of the cash will be used to increase the number of places at The Portsmouth Academy from 192 to 250.

Springfield, Admiral Lord Nelson and Charter Academy could also be expanded.
