Row over flagpole noise at housing site

RESIDENTS have objected to plans to erect five 4m flagpoles and five signs at the gateway to a controversial development.

Bellway Homes has applied to Havant Borough Council to put in signs in Hawthorne Close, Hayling Island.

It comes after the government inspector approved plans for 131 homes for fields in Mengham. The council had initially refused the application.

Eighteen neighbours have written to the council to object, concerned that the flapping flags could disturb Brent geese and other wildlife and would act at a scarecrow.

The residents’ submission to the council adds: ‘Local people will now have a 24/7 reminder of this development as the noise of wire ropes knocking against the flagpoles in the wind results in noise being generated every day and night for the length of term of the development – currently proposed as mid-2016.’

But council officers say the designs are acceptable. Councillors will make a final decision at a meeting on Thursday.
