In January large chunks of the defences in front of the naval memorial, which has since been repaired, and at Long Curtain Moat collapsed as a result of Storm Brendan. Part of the stone revetment at Long Curtain Moat was further compromised when the seafront was battered by winds of around 40 miles per hour during Storm Jorge at the end of February.

All the defences from Long Curtain Moat to Eastney are due to be replaced part of a £131m scheme.
