Shock at U-turn over town’s library move

Have your say

There was major opposition to the idea of Emsworth Library moving from its own building in The Square to Emsworth Community Association, in a bid by Hampshire County Council to save £30,000.

This week it was announced the costs involved in upgrading the community centre would outweigh the savings in the long run.

Speaking on behalf of the ECA chairman Jean Tier said there was initial reluctance on the part of ECA, but they eventually supported the plans in the interest of the community.

Mrs Tier said it was a setback to plans to create a cultural hub and added: ‘We have undertaken a considerable amount of work in trying to fit the requirements of a modern library into the community centre and we were hopeful that all this work would have resulted in a successful transfer of the library to our building.

‘It was therefore a shock for us to learn that, as a result of costs associated with the move, Hampshire County Council no longer consider Emsworth Community Centre a viable option.’
