A SOLIDARITY protest will be held on the steps of Portsmouth’s Guildhall by local activists.

Portsmouth Against the Cuts Together (Pact) has announced it will support a Europe-wide day of action organised by the European Trades Union Confederation on Wednesday, November 14.

On the day there is expected to be mass strike action, including general strikes, in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and Greece.

It is the start of what trades unions are describing as co-ordinated ‘action against austerity’.

Portsmouth Trades Council met last week and has called a protest at 5pm on the Guildhall steps until around 5.30pm.

Pact convenor Jon Woods said the demonstration would ‘show solidarity and send a message of support to our sisters and brothers taking action across Europe; show that we are fighting an international attack on working class living standards; continue to put pressure on for a general strike in this country.’
