Street lights are dimmed even further by authority

Hampshire County Council has agreed to dim lights on residential roads by 45 per cent from switch-on until midnight, 65 per cent from midnight until 5am and then back to 45 per cent until switch off.

It will replace the most recent dimming level of 35/60/35.

Street lights were first dimmed in 2012, when lighting strength was reduced by 25 per cent from switch-on until midnight, 50 per cent from midnight until 5am and back to 25 per cent until switch off.

The authority manages street lamps across Havant, Fareham, Gosport, Winchester and East Hampshire. The most recent changes, implemented this month, will save £116,618. A report says it is preferable to switching lights off.
