Interserve staff from the Unit Personnel Office (UPO) cleared litter, including plastic bottles and nets and ropes from the beach area, as part of the company's '˜Give A Day Of Your Time' scheme.

Sheena Dawson, who coordinated the beach clean, said: '˜The beach at Lee is well looked after, but I am glad that we were able to do our bit to help keep it clean and help both the environment and the local community.

'˜There were all sorts of plastics and small items, some of which looked like they'd been dropped as litter, but I'm sure that some of the stuff was also washed onto the beach by the tide.

'It was a great day and hopefully we can do something similar again in the future.'
