PORTSMOUTH’S Conservative group has denied complaining about invitations for Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson’s Christmas party.

As reported, the council leader said a Tory party activist complained about his office spending taxpayers’ money on postage for 100 invitations. A committee has cleared him of wrongdoing because his secretary said she made the mistake. He paid back the bill but asked for the Conservatives to pay costs towards the meeting. But Tory councillor Luke Stubbs said it wasn’t to do with his members.

‘Perhaps his time would be better spent on trying to persuade Mike Hancock to pay back the huge costs of the investigation into his behaviour,’ he said.
