A TORY leader has been elected at Winchester City Council after a crucial vote last night.

George Beckett became the leader of the council after councillors from minority parties voted in his favour.

The Conservatives and Liberal Democrats both have 27 councillors, giving the casting vote to two Independents and one Labour member.

Councillor Beckett replaces Lib Dem leader Kelsie Learney, who has led the authority for the last year.

The council oversees a large swathe of Hampshire, including Denmead, Bishop’s Waltham and Wickham.
