PORTSMOUTH’S Conservative leader has helped promote a bid to secure £1.5bn worth of cash from central government and private funding.

Cllr Donna Jones met with Greg Clark, minister of state at the cabinet office, to discuss the joint City Deal that’s been made by Portsmouth and Southampton’s city councils.

If successful, the money would be spent on regeneration chemes including the naval base and better road networks. There would be more local control over the running of assets such as motorways and railways. Cllr Jones said: ‘It’s essential Portsmouth keeps moving forward in terms of new homes, new jobs, and attracting new business to the city.’
