WORK will be done to ensure councillors receive proper training when working with vulnerable adults.
Tory councillors Alistair Thompson and Steve Weymss raised concerns that member training had not stepped up following the publication of a report about the conduct of MP Mike Hancock by QC Nigel Pascoe.
Mr Pascoe was hired by the council to investigate whether the Fratton councillor acted inappropriately towards a vulnerable female constituent. Mr Hancock apologised for his actions last summer.
But the Lib Dems said Mr Pascoe’s dossier did not give training recommendations - while other external reports have.
It was agreed training must also be improved in light of an Osted report which revealed the authority’s role in looking after children needed improvement.
Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson, Lib Dem group leader, reitereated he was wrong to defend Mr Hancock. ‘I didn’t believe what she (the victim) said and I should have done,’ he said.
