Alan Emerson moved to Emsworth with his wife Judy in 1978 and they became stalwart members of the Methodist Church and active in the Liberal party.

He was elected as ward councillor in 1991, followed by Hilary and then Michael Bolt, so that the town was represented by three Lib Dem councillors.

With other Lib Dem councillors from Hayling Island, Bedhampton, Purbrook, St Faith’s and Leigh Park, Mr Emerson played a part in having minority control of Havant Borough Council.

He was elected as mayor for 1997/1998 and became the first Lib Dem mayor of the borough.

He later became involved with the extensions to Emsworth Methodist church.

Councillor Faith Ponsonby, who represents Leigh Park, said: ‘He is remembered with great fondness by those whose lives he touched.

‘This is not only for his gentle humanity, but also for his quiet wisdom and his humour.’
